Rating: ★★★
This reviewer recommends ‘Shazam!’ to people over the age of 7, and who enjoy superhero movies and DC films.
‘Shazam!’ is the seventh movie a part of the DCEU.
It stars Zachary Levi as Shazam, Mark Strong as Dr Sivana, Asher Angel as Billy Batson and Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman.
May I say that Zachary Levi and Jack Dylan Grazer did a fantastic job in their roles. Every time you saw Levi onscreen portraying the titular character, you believe that he is a 14-year-old in a 30-something-year-old body. It’s just when Batson says Shazam and turns into a superhero, his personality drastically changes to the point that at times I forgot that Billy and Shazam were the same person.
I knew from the moment the first trailer dropped that Dylan Grazer was going to do a great job. He had proved himself back in 2017’s ‘IT’ (★★★★★) and he proves himself again in DC’s latest superhero film.

The final battle at the end of the film was action-packed, funny and teased several ways the upcoming sequel could go.

There were a few problems with this movie. For starters, this movie was made out to be a comedy-action with a coming-of-age story but ended up being a mash of several different genres that didn't share the screen time equally. For the most part it was drama, with action mainly coming in towards the end. And the scenes including Freddy and Shazam were the funniest of the whole film. Their chemistry with each other was great to watch. Another genre to add to the mix was horror. Some scenes being down-right scary. That wasn’t a big surprise due to the fact that the director’s other two films were ‘Lights Out’ and ‘Annabelle: Creations’. But I wished the good horror scenes weren't in this movie as they didn't fit into this family-friendly film.

The villain of the movie, Dr Sivana, wasn’t the best. I don't blame Mark Strong as he did do a good job with what he was given.

There are things to enjoy in 'Shazam!'. Some of the jokes were hilarious, making me laugh out loud, the acting from the leads was amazing and it’s more upbeat and kid-friendly compared to the previous films in the DCEU. It’s just I wish it was better.
