'Holmes & Watson' Review

'Holmes & Watson' Review
One of the Easiest "Try Not To Laugh" Challenges

Rating: ★

While on The Empire Film Podcast, actor Steve Coogan, who played Gustav Klinger in the Sherlock Holmes parody, perfectly described 'Holmes & Watson' by saying: ’People say it’s a load of rubbish. I think in 20 years time when the dust has settled and people are able to look at Holmes & Watson objectively, people will say, "It’s still rubbish".’ I could not say it better myself.
Directed by Etan Cohen (not to be confused with Ethan Coen of the Coen Brothers directing duo), the movie follows Sherlock Holmes and John Watson as they stumble upon a murder scene and receive a note which says that they have four days to solve the crime unless the Queen will die.

For a comedy to work, it must meet these guidelines: it must have a well-written screenplay, it must have funny jokes with good set-ups and satisfying pay-offs, and the performances must be engaging, no matter how looney or self-serious they are. Given the talent in front of and behind the camera, it is surprising how 'Holmes & Watson' manages to not even meet a single one of those criteria.
Nearly everything about this movie is abysmal. The performances are awful, the jokes are as bottom-of-the-barrel as they get, the screenplay is cliched and the mystery-centric story is boring.
By the end of the 90-minute runtime, you would be wondering to yourself how the same people behind great comedies such as 'Tropic Thunder' and 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy', were also behind this movie.

A decade after Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly combined their comedic talents in 'Step Brothers', the duo is back and worse than ever. A far cry from the hilarity goldmine that is the 2008 cult classic, this is a worthy winner of multiple Razzies including Worst Picture and Worst Director. Although it may not be the worst movie of all time, with dull and predictable jokes, unengaging performances, a boring story and cliched dialogue, 'Holmes & Watson' is one of the easiest "Try Not To Laugh" challenges out there.
