'1917' Review
A Technically Impressive World War 1 Drama

Rating: ★★★★

If he was dipping his toes in to test the waters with the opening scene of 'Spectre', Sam Mendes dived into the deep end with '1917', a "boots on the ground" World War 1 drama that is shot and edited to appear as one long take. With great performances from leads George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, and deserving Oscar nominations for Roger Deakins' gorgeous cinematography, Thomas Newman's beautiful score and Sam Mendes' masterful directing, '1917' isn't just a technical marvel but also a serious awards contender.
